Elon Musk admitted during an appearance on the Third Row Tesla podcast.
"I wasn’t sure if nobody would buy it or if a lot of people would buy it," he said.
"I told the team, ‘Listen, if nobody wants to buy this, we could always make one that looks like the other trucks,'" continued Musk. "Like ‘OK, that was a weird failure, but now we’ll make one that looks like the others."
According to Musk, his intentions were to shock audiences with his bold and brash design. "A lot of reasons why people buy pickup trucks in the U.S. is because it’s the most badass truck. Which one’s the toughest truck? What’s tougher than a truck? A tank. A tank from the future."
I really appreciate the honesty from Musk, the Cybertruck is/was a huge risk for Tesla. I would've been surprised if he went on and said that he always knew it would be a success or something like that.
